Físico alemán. Las leyes de Kirchhoff (1845) permiten el cálculo de las corrientes, voltajes y resistencias de redes eléctricas (fue el primero en demostrar que la corriente fluye a través de un conductor a la velocidad de la luz) y generalizaron a tres dimensiones las ecuaciones que describen el flujo de corriente. Junto con Robert Bunsen, demostró que cada elemento químico al ser calentado emite luz de color de una longitud de onda específica para el elemento, propiedad que es la base del análisis espectral. Usaron esta nueva herramienta de investigación para descubrir el cesio (1860) y el rubidio (1861), y abrieron una nueva era en la astronomía cuando la aplicaron al espectro solar.
